Hawthorn - Crataegus monogyna

Picture

The Hawthorn is a deciduous, dense-leaved, thorny tree commonly used for hedgerows.

The Hawthorn can be easily identified by the serrated leaves that are produced spirally on the twigs and branches. The bark of young trees is smooth and grey but older specimens produce lateral fissures.

The trees produce small white, scented flowers and small, deep red, edible fruit known as a Haw.
